Ice Friday: Richard Adam’s “Watership Down”

Like the pain of a bad wound, the effect of a deep shock takes a while to be felt. When a child is told, for the first time in his life, that a person he has known is dead, although he does not disbelieve it, he may well fail to comprehend it and later ask–perhaps more than once–where the dead person is and when he is coming back.

You Think You Know Something

And then you don’t, and everything goes down with that, making you feel like nothing, certainly nothing like before, when you said and did things like you knew what you were doing. It’s not just the big things – death and disease and Trump – but more the tiny bits suddenly gone – train delay, store closed, panhandler no longer there – creating doubt about what might be next. No job, no love, civilization done. And then we have to get used to that.

Lost & Missing Items: Heel From the Storm

We have found 2 backpacks (1 blue, 1 grey) from yesterday, and 1 pair of black heels after the Thursday thunderstorm.

Cixin Liu’s “The Three-Body Problem”

Like other great works of science fiction, Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem is flawed in its writing and yet notable for conjecture on the human condition:

Humans have surely invested more than $45 billion in saving species near extinction. And probably more than $450 billion has been spent on saving the environment from degradation. But what’s the use? Civilization continues to follow its path of destruction of all life on Earth except for humans. It’s impossible to stop the madness of humanity. (311) The most surprising aspect of the Earth-Trisolaris Movement was that so many people had abandoned all hope in human civilization, hated and were willing to betray their own species, and even cherished as their highest ideal the elimination of the entire human race, including themselves and their children. (317) The Trisolarian plan focuses on emphasizing the negative environmental effects of scientific development and showing signs of supernatural power to the population of Earth. They will also attempt to use a series of ‘miracles’ to construct the illusory universe that cannot be explained by the logic of science. After these illusions are maintained for some time, it’s possible the Trisolarian civilization may be a target of worship here. (360)

Ice Friday: You Have Pissed Your Life

Any way you walk

Any way you turn

Any way you stand

Any way you lie

You have pissed your life

From an ineffectual fool

butting his head blindly

against obstacles, become

brilliant–focusing,

performing accurately to

a given end–

Any way you walk

Any way you turn

Any way you stand

Any way you lie

You have pissed your life

Mindful Gong for Leaf Goals

Instead of the damned blaring horn, spotlights and screaming, the Toronto Maple Leafs should focus on the import of the moment. Mindful Gong for Leaf GoalsA single note on a gong followed by the crowd rising in silence, a bow between teams and audience, after which they would resume play. That’s what makes a champion.

Leafs Fandom: Losing the Moment

It was to be magic, the stuff of dreams: a pair of seats ten rows behind the Capitals’ net for Game Seven, perfect for that overtime goal by Matthews, Marner or Nylander. Leafs Fandom: Losing the MomentAnd then not…and I was sent this damnable message: Leafs Fandom: Losing the Moment“Thanks for being a fan”? Fuck you. They’re my seats! Mine. I owned them on this night, just like the Leafs owned…ugh.

Overlooked New York: Liberty Park

Liberty Park has recently been opened atop the parking garage immediately south of the 9/11 Memorial in Downtown Manhattan. It has the same design aesthetic as the Chelsea Highline but is much less crowded, although it is also marred by an excessively almost angrily worded memorial, America’s Response Monument. And so, while the crowds of the 9/11 Memorial may not be here, this statue can give the feeling of impending doom

Bucolic: Not Like Skunk

While bucolic is defined as relating to pleasant aspects of the countryside and country life, the word doesn’t sound like that. (It sounds more of a disease.)

Not like skunk, because skunk sounds like skunk.

Ice Friday: Robert Hunter’s “Loser”

All that I am asking for is ten gold dollars
And I could pay you back with one good hand
You can look around about the wide world over
And you’ll never find another honest man. Ice Friday: Robert Hunter's "Loser"Everybody prayin’ and drinkin’ that wine
I can tell the Queen of Diamonds by the way she shines
Come to daddy on the inside straight,
Well I got no chance of losin’ this time
